HEADLINE: No one was arrested at the Mercer PA GOP Meet and Greet

Written by Roberta Biros

All was calm and friendly at Hempfield Station One on Thursday night for the Meet and Greet of Republican Candidates that was sponsored by the Mercer County GOP. Fair warning from this “blogmaster” prevented confrontation and kept “greedy incumbents’ out of the limelight. These were all good things. I attended the affair with “backup” and bailout cash, but it was unnecessary as everyone was on their best behavior. No arrests!

Some ‘not-so-local’ attendees may have thought that the crowd was small, but as a Mercer Countian I was impressed with the turn out. Those that attended were genuinely interested in hearing the candidates (and their representatives speak), and they listened intently to the presentations from nine speakers. I’ve written exhaustively about each of the candidates in the past, so I’ll focus my comments today on some summary thoughts from the evening, a few ‘highlights’, a couple of ‘head scratch moments’, and a photo montage with comments.

Summary

Representing the candidates for Governor, we had Mercer County Commissioner John Lechner speaking on behalf of the Corbett campaign and Ed Henderson was on hand to speak on behalf of the campaign for Sam Rohrer. Once again, Ed Henderson did a stand up job in representing Rohrer’s campaign. He accidentally coined a phrase last night when he stated “Sam’s the Man”. It was an inadvertent slogan, but (in my opinion) it should be adopted campaign wide. In John Lechner’s presentation for Corbett’s campaign he took time to touch on the BonusGate scandal (a topic that is close to my heart). He pointed out that the investigations were not politically driven . . . which I accept, but I would have liked the opportunity to ask one question. “If the investigations weren’t politically driven, why hasn’t the Attorney Generals office gotten actively involved in the Jane Orie investigation with the same intensity?” This was just a question that I had at the top of my head, but, unfortunately, NO QUESTIONS were accepted from the audience. Bummer.

Who was on hand to represent the candidates for Lt. Governor? No one. Not a single individual showed up to discuss the candidacies of nine different Republicans that are competing for the nomination in the Primary. Hmmm. Was it disinterest on the part of the campaigns or was it lack of effort on the part of the event planners to notify the candidates of the opportunity? The Mercer GOP has a history of only inviting the candidates that they actually want to attend the event, so this may not have been a simple clerical error. Either way, it was a missed opportunity for the candidates and it was a missed opportunity for concerned citizens to be educated about their choices.

Were Senatorial candidates represented? I suppose you could say “sort of”. Committee Chairman Dave King told everyone that they should vote for Pat Toomey, but he failed to mention that Toomey has a Republican opponent in the race in Peg Luksik. Rather than providing an informative presentation of ALL of the names on the ballot, Dr. King choose to focus his attention on the GOP’s personal horse in the race. Again, this is the norm for the Mercer GOP, but as a matter of fairness I found the move despicable. The obvious attempt to insult Ms. Luksik was mentioned to me MORE THAN ONCE by concerned attendees. Shame on Dr. King and the Mercer County GOP for lacking open-door and even-handed political policies . . . but are we really surprised?

The big race in the area is for the 3rd Congressional District and all six candidates were personally on hand for this gathering. Dr. Martha Moore, Mike Kelly, Ed Franz, Paul Huber, Steve Fisher, and Clayton Grabb were all provided an opportunity to speak. Having listened to these candidates present their platforms more times than I can count, I’ll admit that there was very little ‘new material’ for me to report from last night, but I’ll try.

Dr. Martha Moore has managed to re-invented herself. She has embraced herself for exactly what she is and she makes no attempt to morph into something that she is not. She is a straight-shootin’, no-bologna-talkin’, firecracker of a concerned citizen. She spoke from the heart with levity and quirkiness that has gained her a bit of a “Betty White following”. She has become the highlight of events and I have become a real fan. God Bless Dr. Martha Moore.

Mike Kelly drew the short straw when he was selected to speak AFTER Dr. Moore. She is tough act to follow. His points were basically the same. He made one comment that I thought was worth repeating. When describing his role as a business owner he said “You can get through the good times with a smile on your face, and you get the through not-so-good times with a bigger smile on your face”. I found the comment humorous as one of the main complaints that I’ve had with Mr. Kelly is his inability to ‘put a smile’ on his face in an effort to hide his anger. I thought the irony was funny.

Ed Franz’ message was pretty much the same as usual. I would like to point out to Mr. Franz that he really shouldn’t continue to repeat (time and time again) about how he supported “conservative candidates like Phil English”. As a conservative, Mr. Franz, your choice of friends doesn’t impress me, and your desire to repeat it to the crowd at each and event makes me laugh. I’d admit that Ed did switch it up just a bit last night when he mentioned that (aside from supporting Phil English) he has also worked for the campaigns of Michele Brooks and Bob Robbins. Hmmmm. Good to know, and thanks for the info. As a “conservative”, it is good to see his choice of friends. In a musical reference that is loosely tied to the great “Meatloaf” I say “One Out of Three Ain’t Bad”.

Paul Huber was himself. He has a polished delivery and a packaged message that hasn’t changed much. His jokes and delivery are good, but they don’t change from one presentation to the next. There was nothing about last night that stood out to me, although he did get into some deep discussions with attendees when the meeting broke out into individual conversations. He worked the crowd well.

The most memorable part of Steve Fisher’s evening was Chairman King’s introduction of Mr. Fisher as “Mike Fisher” rather than “Steve Fisher”. Steve politely and light-heartedly corrected Dr. King’s error (which made Steve look great), but in the end Dr. King made himself look like a dufus (which was not a long trip). As with my earlier note that the Mercer GOP failed to fairly represent ALL of the Republican candidates, Dr. King highlights how out-of-touch the County Committee is by failing to know the candidates names. I know each and every one of the 3rd Congressional Candidates on sight (and, in return, they all know me . . . it is referred to as mutual respect). Dr. King should have done his homework. It was, perhaps, a Freudian slip, but I don’t forgive him for it either way. It was unprofessional to say the least. Steve Fisher wasn’t phased and he managed to present himself with the same positive and upbeat message that he offers at each event. It is worth noting that Steve Fisher and his campaign showed their commitment to the people of Mercer County with a forma information booth at the event (the only candidate that took time and effort to do so), and he seemed to have a large team on hand to handle questions and engage the attendees. Steve Fisher showed a commitment and seriousness that was not matched at this particular gathering.

Clayton Grabb did not disappoint. Surprisingly Dr. King “allowed” Mr. Grabb to speak, which was a relief (knowing that Dr. King has not been shy about his dislike for “Tea Party Candidates” like Clayton). Mr. Grabb did not hold back and again used his quote “My Republican Party has left us down before”, which was met with nods across the crowd (and an unapproving look from Dr. King). Mr. Grabb’s big quote of the night also made it in The Herald when he stated “I’m not going to work with Obama, I will be going there to cut him off at the knees, to make sure he doesn’t do anymore damage to this country of ours”. Clayton’s message doesn’t change from one venue to the next, but it is always spot-on and connects with those in attendance.

In Closing . . .

It was the Mercer County GOP’s night to shine . . . and they did not. The Committee leadership did what they always do . . . they attempted to hijack an event with the eventual goal of hijacking an election.

If you’d like another angle on the night’s events, I suggest that you read a post by my fellow Mercer County blogger, Rich Talbert HERE.

In the words of Rich Talbert, “(Chairman) King MUST Resign”.

Photo Montage with Comments:

The Steve Fisher campaign was well represented with a full promotional booth and numerous representatives (below).

Ed Henderson of Stoneboro (below) was on hand to represent Sam Rohrer, candidate for Governor.

Before the formal presentations began, I was able to catch some shots of candidates mixing with the attendees. Here is Paul Huber (below) discussing issues with constituents.

Mike Kelly (below) is having a serious discussion with attendees.

Clayton Grabb (below) is sharing his thoughts with some interested locals.

Ed Franz (below) chatting it up with friends and concerned citizens.

Dr. King (below) presented the opening announcements and closing statements. He managed to promote the candidates that he supports and attempted to stumble over those he does not. His preferences were clear. [As a side note, the duct tape on the decorative photo of Lincoln was a nice touch. The tape has a strikingly familiar look which is similar to a Mercer GOP yard sign mis-hap from last year. Perhaps Dr. King and his crew need to realize that transparent tape was invented YEARS ago. I'll be glad o provide them with an 89 cent roll next time I see them.]

Dr. Martha Moore (below) was the first to speak. She admitted later that she was unprepared, but that is generally when she is at her best.

Steve Fisher (below) addressed the crowd. He and his staff were on hand to answer questions and to discuss issues.

As always, just my opinion.

  1. Sadly, Dr. King also mentioned how we need to get back to the founding fathers, including Honest Abe. Perhaps he isn't aware that Abe Lincoln was not a founding father...

And yes, the duct tape was embarrassing. It was one of the first things I noticed when I walked in. Yeah, it's tacky, but give Abe a little more respect!

As far as the notification, the Mercer County GOP is woefully inept in many ways, but the outreach is horrible. This group thinks Twitter is some kind of neurological disorder!

As long as the party remains in control of the Richardson and Robbins camps, it won't change. It isn't about growth...it's about power. If you aren't invited into their circle, you simply aren't wanted (as you well know, Roberta).

  2. I'm here as "Anonymous" for convenience. Call me "Fairplay". It's time for concerned PA Republicans to oust all of the Republican party's state leadership. They are playing by their own rules and couldn't care less what the rank and file party voters really want. Florida did it just last year and PA can do the same thing. Get rid of the dirtbags that are cheating the voters out of an honest airing of the candidates. Vote only for committee persons who you are positive will make the changes that are so badly needed.

  3. In response to Rich Talbert:

Hey Rich, pardon me but I'm going to rearrange your sentence for additional impact because I can. You know enough about me to realize that I'm willing to call a spade a spade and state the obvious. I will twist your words just a bit and state . . .

"As long as the Richardson and Robbins camps remain in control of the party, it won't change."

You are absolutely correct when you state that "it isn't about growth . . . it is about power". They have purposely and and methodically limited the size of their "circle" in an attempt to control every single move by every one of their "team members".

I'm probably the most obvious wrench (some would say "wench") that has been thrown into the works, but there are many outcasts that want to see the Mercer GOP become right-minded and inclusive for the sake of "good government" rather than for the sake of the "good ol' boys (and gals)". Until that happens, we will stand happily as unaffiliated independents and we will make a home for ourselves on the outside of the circle.

  4. In response to "Fairplay":

If conservatives want a party, they will need to TAKE it. GOP Members of the General Assembly, GOP State Committee, and Mercer GOP Committee are littered with dirt bags of all shapes and sizes. Become informed and make smart decisions when you vote.

It should go without saying, but doesn't . . . so allow me . . . Both parties (Rs and Ds) are the same, and their pollution by scumbags is obvious. THIS is the year that people are waking up and smelling the coffee. I am hopeful that voters will finally do their homework and work torwards a thorough house cleaning at all levels and in both parties.

  5. Why wasn't this article just called, King stinks? Because that's all it said.

  6. Good morning Anonymous.

I have a feeling you were trying to criticize the article, but you just didn't know how. Instead, you managed to hit on a good point . . . "King does stink". He stinks as the Chairman of the Mercer GOP and he should resign. Thanks for joining in the conversation.

  7. I guess we were at two different meetings Blogmaster Roberta.

Now personally I like Dr. Moore and with her various degrees and background, I do not doubt that she could do the job, but she was totally unprepared to speak at Thursday nights meeting. One, she came in late and second I found her message boring and un-organized. Enough is Enough!

Mike Kelly was different in curbing his anger, but after the speaking session I found out how to pull his chain. Just ask him about "Cash for Clunkers"! That will get him riled up! Mike must be reading your blog though, because he made a few references in his speech that addressed some issues raised in this blog! ie, he went out of his way to explain that he had earned an Atheletic/Academic scholarship to Notre Dame.
FYI, did you know he went to ND with Dahlkemper's brother? Interesting?

I'm not happy about Ed mentioning time and time again that he supported English either. English was a RINO in my book! But in all fairness, I do not remember Ed saying he worked for Robbins campaign. Because if he had worked for Robbin's you would think that Coconut Bob would be supporting him, when he is really supporting Kelly! HE WORKED FOR SANTORUM"S CAMPAIGN, not Robbins. I think you got your Senators mixed up?

Huber once again came off to me as too old and too Democrat. Not sure if you picked up on it but he actually used a "Progressive" term in his speech. He mentioned "The Way Forward"! The Progressives have been using this code talk for a few years. Fellow conservative beware of a Poser.

Fisher did fine brushing off the Mike FIsher intro, for some reason Dave had Mike on the brain. Freudian slip?? Since he really supports Mike Kelly? But Steve's message was good. I'm still not thrilled with insurance salesmen!

Clayton once again talked from the heart and came off as the Grass Roots favorite.

It's going to be very interesting the next few weeks! Remember fellow conservatives, we must pick the most true conservative that we have and sombody not afraid to take the Princess down at the knees. We have to pick the beat possible candidate that can beat her!

By the way, at the Mercer County Friends of the NRA banquet Saturday night, only Frantz, Kelly and Huber attended. All three have been big supporters of all the NRA events hosted in the 3 rd District this spring. Kelly left 1/2 way through the event after he got his name mentioned for paying $400.00 for an auction item!

Frantz and Huber stayed for the whole event. However, only Ed Frantz was introduced by the MC and a True Patriot! Thats code for being a true Conservative NRA supporter!

  8. All good comments, Anonymous. However, I am going to have to confront you on one VERY CLEAR error in your statements. You have your "Ed Franz Goggles On" in reference to his Bob Robbins relationship. Ed Franz very clearly stated that he supported English, Robbins, and Michele Brooks. I made note of it and my husband made note of it . . . a statement like that isn't something that would pass my ears without being noticed. It even made its way to my written notes. Next time you have an opportunity you should ask Mr. Franz about it and see what he says. YOU WOULD THINK that Coconut Bob would be supporting him in return, but that simply isn't the case. Coconut Bob only works for someone else if it suits him to do so.

Mr. Franz can hold on to the warm fuzzy thoughts that he helped "conservatives" like Phil English, Bob Robbins, and Michele Brooks . . . but you see for yourself that Mr. Franz is on his own NOW. The "conservatives" that he chose to help in the past would rather cut Ed Franz' throat as stick their neck out for him. That includes English, Robbins, AND Brooks. They'll take his help and pat him on the back while he was doing it, but they count on him being naive and coming back for more. They never intend on returning the favor . . . because when it comes down to it . . . it is all about THEM. Ed Franz was dooped by all of them. Dooped . . . plain and simple.

  9. I heard the English-Robbins-Brooks reference too. It seemed like he did it to impress the Mercer GOP incrowd. it didn't. they all picked their man in this race and it isn't Franze. Kelly is their man and any one that thinks different is blind.

your right about English-Robbin-Brooks not supporting any one else. they are only worried about them selves and it has been that way for a long time. you had an experience with that last year and you seem to know how things are now

    ReplyDelete
  10. Thanks for the support. I remembered the statement, but the confirmation from yet another attendee is always good.

Everyone knows that Kelly is the guy for the Mercer GOP. The rumor is that Brooks has gone rogue and is supporting Franz in the shadows, but I guarantee that she will stay WAY BACK in the shadows. She's probably already handed Mr. Franz a line like "I won't choose one friend over another". That is her favorite line and she's beginning to wear it out.

Franz will never get support from Robbins / Richardson / English . . . and the list goes on. They are very tightly controlled. They might drag him along for a while (just for fun), but Kelly is their guy. If Kelly doesn't win the Primary, they will focus their attention and money on Robbins because he is their #1 priority. The 3rd Congressional Republican nominee will get ZERO support I am certain.

  11. The GOP in MERCER is a powerless organisation. English is gone. Richardson is done (we can only hope). Robbins is washed upand should have been kicked out in 06. Brooks is just along for a free ride and will pander to who ever is willing to carry her. And Dave King is an embarassment. You ad to that the mindless underlings and you get what amounts to a bad joke.

Why cant they all find a new hobby and keep there dirty little hands out of politics for once in there life.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Thanks for the comments Anonymous.

I cannot disagree with anything that you've said.

English deserved to go . . .Richardson deserved to go, but is still hanging on . . . Robbins is GOING TO go . . . Brooks will find someone to tether herself to . . . and Dave King is just "Dave King" (he is an anomaly for which there is no explanation).

It is a little like the Mercer County version of the Addams Family. “They’re creepy and they’re cooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re altogether ookey, the Mercer GOP!”

  13. Cannot express how much I enjoy the rhetoric on this blog--still sickens me that the R and R gang are still controlling the republican side of elections here. Been around long enought to have experienced most of what I read here. This gang picks a candidate, campaigns like hell for that candidate, but will tell anyone who asks that they aren't helping anyone. Why do they have to lie? They could just say who their person is and go with it. No one cares. But their back alley, shady wayh of doing things just ticks off anyone who is not in the inner circle. Wonder who their mole is that monitors your blog to see what you are up to?

  14. Back room games define Mercer County politics and it is sad. However, this year the deals are becoming far more public and things that I've been writing about for almost two years are on the front page of the paper. It is refreshing to see people interested in find out more and digging a little deeper to see exactly what is happening.

We all need to stick with it and expose them for what they are.
